Motorcycle Insurance

Let's face it motorcycles are in a league of their own if you're looking for an exhilarating experience. They're also in a league of their own as far as insurance is concerned, and this is something many people overlook when they go out to buy themselves a bike. Of course, just as is the case with cars, if you want to ride a bike in the UK you first need to get insurance for it.

Contrary to what you may believe, the vast majority of insurance companies welcome motorcyclists nowadays, but unless you know what to look out for, motorcycle insurance can cost a pretty penny. If you've already purchased a bike then you may have to bite the bullet to a certain extent, but if you haven't yet bought one, then you can certainly make a difference to the cost of your insurance.

Make and Model:
Certain makes and models are more prone to being stolen than others, so in that respect you should do a little research on this subject, because obviously those makes and models will cost more to insure. Also, high performance bikes generally cost more to insure than touring bikes simply because insurance companies consider them to be more at risk in terms of accidents. Furthermore, people who purchase high performance bikes tend to be addicted to speed, at least in the eyes of insurers.

Engine Capacity:
A brand new 1300cc is going to cost more to replace or repair than a 400cc for example, and as a result, motorcycle insurance for a large machine will be more expensive. It should be mentioned however, a second hand 750cc which is a few years old will probably cost less to insure that what a brand new 450cc would. Basically, insurance companies base their rates largely on the amount it will cost them to replace the bike in question.

Age of Driver:
If you're under the age of 25, or if you've never ridden a motorcycle before, then you should seriously consider steering clear of the big powerful bikes. Your insurance will cost you significantly less if you limit yourself to a slightly more modest engine size, even if only for a few years. Once you have more experience, and you've built up a good 'no-claims' history, then by all means go ahead and buy the bike of your dreams.

Security:
Always try to make sure you keep your bike locked under lock and key when you're not using it. If you intend leaving your bike parked out on the road at night, you can expected to pay far more than you actually need to for motorcycle insurance. Any anti-theft devices you have fitted will also help to keep premiums down, so of course this is also something worth thinking about.

Insuring your motorcycle can either be affordable, or it can be extremely expensive. If you're serious about finding cheap cover, then you really do need to pay attention to what's been discussed in this article, and above all, make sure you get several quotes from a number of providers before you decide to go with a particular motorcycle insurance company.
